About Francis Parker Model United Nations
Club Activities
Every Tuesday afternoon, members of the Model UN team find themselves in G101, diving into discussion about international relations and global crises. If we aren't allocating time to practice the structure of MUN or to research our designated country policy/portfolio powers (in preparation for a conference), we hold a variety of activities that add texture to our public speaking and negotiation skills. These activities include but are not limited to practice committees, impromptu and written speaking games, and diplomacy simulations. As the academic year winds down, we typically find even more creative ways to supplement our understanding of foreign affairs, including community service or podcast projects and discussions on pertinent current events ranging from the implications of supply chain issues to political coups. In summary, it's a blast.
Frequent Questions
Q: When does the club meet?
A: Tuesdays during the co-curricular and office hours block (2:40-3:30).
Q: What is the time commitment like?
A: The club assigns occasional prep prior to a simulation. You are also required create a research binder and to craft a one page position paper before conferences, which occur at least two times a year.
Q: Are you supposed to have any prior experiences with public speaking?
A: Absolutely not. Often our most successful delegates start off the most timid and reserved. If you do have experience, great! If not, you will have no trouble.
Q: Why join MUN as opposed to any other extracurricular?
A: Not only do you get the opportunity to travel for competitions and sport snazzy sweatshirts around campus, but you also have an opportunity to enhance your global perspective and understanding of statecraft among a fun group of students inquisitive about the world around them.

CLub HistoryIn May of 2020, Owen Lewis, ridden with the boredom of quarantine, began assembling the tools to create a Model UN team. Owen, alongside a dedicated faculty advisor and leadership team, began researching organizational tactics to more effectively run an academic team as well as constructive and engaging methods of teaching Model UN. As the hybrid school year began, the virtual meetings started off small. Using hand emojis instead of placards and chat messages instead of committee notes, it was a challenge to emulate the fun, fast-paced nature of a committee from home. Nonetheless, the leadership team learned to adapt to the conditions and more members began to join. Before we knew it, we attended our first two virtual conferences through SFMUN and OSUMUN and offering virtual events through the San Diego Diplomacy Council. After the team returned back to campus, the rest was history.
Past ConferencesThe FPSMUN team has had had the honor and privilege to travel and attend the following conferences:

MUN Impact Spotlight: Passing the Gavel
Bea SAUERBRONN '23"Model UN has allowed me to tap into my creativity while working with others towards an (occasionally comical) objective. It has helped me become a better public speaker and team player while begin to create an environment that fosters global awareness. Model UN will always be special to me, and I cannot wait to see whaat the future holds for this team." P.S. Crisis is better than GA |
OWEN LEWIS '23"It is far from an exaggeration to say that Model UN has changed my life. I have witnessed a dramatic transformation in myself that I absolutely attribute to MUN and its stress on political reform and social change. Starting high school as a reserved (and honestly somewhat indifferent) student, I now am really passionate about IR and want to continue studying diplomatic statecraft in hopes of one day being in the role to make international political systems more equitable and just for others. As a freshmen in quarantine deciding I wanted to bring my MUN knowledge to Parker, I have been so excited by the interest and commitment in the club since we started. I am even more excited, though, to see how successful this team becomes in the near future. " P.S. GA will always be better than Crisis. |
